Hi Friends,

It was a slow news week for VR, in stark contrast to (real) reality. John and Greg from Studio Transcendent will be attending Digital Entertainment World this week. Hope to see you there!

Best,

Oculus Delays Tracking Update

A software update to the “constellation” system which tracks the position of Oculus Rift and its controllers has been delayed a bit as Facebook conducts further tests, with TechCrunch noting “Oculus room-scale VR tracking is still a bit of a mess.” Some have complained of instability in their setups, which rely on Sensors which are essentially filtered webcams to track infrared lights all over the Oculus Rift and Touch controllers. Facebook published a four-part guide (1, 2, 3, 4) to getting the most out of the Sensors.

Meanwhile, Mark Zuckberg hired former Google and Android leader Hugo Barra to lead Facebook’s VR efforts, including the Oculus team.

An update to Elite Dangerous should allow VR players to team up with other players to control a ship together.

The jury deliberated for two days in the ZeniMax v. Oculus case in Texas but hasn’t come to a verdict as of this writing. ZeniMax accused Oculus of using its technology and may be seeking billions.
