New Valve Controller Prototypes Revealed

Valve Software held its Steam Dev Days conference and offered tidbits about the company’s approach to the VR industry, revealing it invested in wireless streaming company Nitero, and the Steam platform is adding more than 1,000 new users every day.

The biggest revelation, however, was a new prototype hand controller that straps around the back of the hand. The design allows people to realistically grasp, release and throw virtual objects without worrying about accidentally tossing the controller across the room.

Eagle Flight from Ubisoft is available on Oculus Rift for $40. An overview of the game is available in a 3-minute trailer. The game should be particularly noted for its use of motion sickness mitigation techniques, which include narrowing the field of view dynamically based on movement which allows players to fly over and under Paris at high speeds. It’s not a perfect solution in our experience, but it’s something a lot of other developers may want to emulate.
